While investment performance remains important, Ulka Finance believes successful wealth management begins with understanding families’ aspirations and then selecting financial products accordingly
Dilip Worah, Founder
When India's economy opened up in the early 1990s, the country's investment landscape looked very different from what it is today. Mutual funds were still finding acceptance, investment choices were limited, and most retail investors viewed wealth creation through fixed deposits or direct stock market participation.
Over the following three decades, liberalisation, regulatory reforms, and growing financial awareness transformed mutual funds into one of India's preferred investment avenues.
According to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the industry's AUM have grown beyond ₹75 lakh crores, reflecting both the maturity of the market and the confidence of the investors in Mutual Funds.
Few professionals have witnessed and contributed to that transformation as closely as Ulka Finance and Investments, a Mumbai-based AMFI Registered Mutual Fund Distributor.
The firm's journey has unfolded alongside the evolution of India's mutual fund industry itself. What began as a Chartered Accountant's effort to help clients make tax-efficient financial decisions gradually evolved into a wealth management practice built on long-term investing, appropriate advice, and relationships that now span multiple generations of clients.
Instead of chasing investment trends, Ulka Finance has focused on helping families navigate changing markets while staying committed to clearly defined financial goals.
From Chartered Accountancy to Wealth Management
When Dilip Worah qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1986, wealth management was never part of a grand business plan. His professional practice revolved around taxation and financial advisory, but as his clients became financially successful, many began seeking guidance for investments. They trusted him not only with their taxation but increasingly with their fund management.
At that time, Products such as UTI's US-64 scheme and tax-saving instruments dominated the market.
The arrival of private and international mutual fund houses such as Franklin Templeton, Zurich etc. introduced professionally managed investment products that broadened investment opportunities for Indian households.
While investment performance remains important, Ulka Finance believes successful wealth management begins with understanding families’ aspirations and then selecting financial products accordingly
Backed by his financial expertise and family background in Capital markets, Dilip recognized that wealth creation required far more than selecting investment products. It demanded an understanding of taxation, risk, time horizon, and investor behaviour. That perspective became the foundation of Ulka Finance and Investments, which later adopted a corporate structure to ensure continuity and long-term succession.
The Market Crashes That Defined the Firm's Philosophy
Every wealth manager experiences bull and bear markets. What distinguishes them is how they respond when markets collapse. For Ulka Finance, the defining moments came during three major financial disruptions, the dot-com crash of 2000, the global financial crisis of 2008, and the market turmoil triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The technology bubble was particularly significant. Many investors who had actively traded stocks suffered steep losses and approached Dilip Worah looking for a more sustainable investment approach. Instead of encouraging short-term recovery strategies, he recommended diversified mutual funds and advised clients to remain invested over longer horizons.
“That philosophy was tested repeatedly over the years. During the global financial crisis and later during the pandemic, investor anxiety once again dominated financial conversations. Ulka Finance responded not by changing its investment philosophy, but by reinforcing it.
Clients were encouraged to stay disciplined, continue their systematic investments (SIPs), and, where appropriate, increase exposure to fundamentally strong funds while markets were correcting”, shares Dilip Worah, Founder.
Those decisions strengthened something more valuable than portfolio returns; they strengthened trust. Many clients who experienced these market cycles alongside the firm continue to remain associated with it today.
Building Relationships Beyond Portfolios
While investment performance remains important, Ulka Finance believes successful wealth management begins with understanding family’s needs and selecting suitable financial products. Today, the firm serves both domestic as well as NRI clients in countries like USA, Canada and Dubai.
Every client engagement starts with conversations around financial goals, risk appetite, investment horizon, and future responsibilities. Whether planning for children's education, retirement, or long-term wealth preservation, investment strategies are designed around individual objectives instead of market trends.
As investor expectations have evolved, the firm's offerings have expanded beyond traditional mutual funds to include Portfolio Management Services (PMS), Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), International investment opportunities through GIFT City, and selective exposure to commodities such as gold and silver. Yet mutual funds continue to remain the cornerstone of most clients’ portfolio.
Technology has naturally become an integral part of the advisory process, simplifying transactions executions and in improving operational efficiency.
However, Dilip Worah believes though technology can support decision-making but cannot replace human judgement. Understanding a family's aspirations, financial circumstances, and emotional responses to market volatility requires experience that algorithms alone cannot replicate.
Today, Ulka Finance's role extends well beyond investment advisory. The firm assists clients with succession planning, wealth transmission, wills, and family settlements, ensuring that wealth created over a lifetime is transferred seamlessly to the next generation.
It is a responsibility that has become increasingly significant as the firm now advises the third generation of several client families, with the founder's son Deep Worah (MBA) actively contributing to the business.
For Ulka Finance and Investments, wealth management has never been defined by assets under management alone. Its success lies in remaining a trusted financial partner through every stage of a family'sjourney, from creating wealth, rendering after sales services and protecting it to eventually passing it on. In an industry shaped by constant change, that continuity of trust has become the firm's most enduring investment.
