What to Do Immediately After a UPI Scam
Acting within the first hour significantly improves the possibility of limiting losses. Follow these steps in order:
1. Contact your bank immediately Call your bank's official helpline - the number on the back of your debit card or the bank's verified website, not a number from any message you received. Report the fraudulent transaction and request an account freeze if credentials may have been compromised.
2. Call 1930 India's National Cybercrime Helpline 1930, operated by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is the dedicated financial fraud emergency line. Call immediately. I4C interdiction has helped block over ₹8,031 crore in fraudulent transfers since its launch.
3. File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in Visit the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and file a complaint under "Financial Fraud." This creates an official record and is often required for bank investigations and potential recovery.
4. Preserve all evidence Retain and note down: Transaction ID/Reference Number (RRN), UPI ID of the recipient, amount, date and time, screenshots of the transaction and any communications, phone numbers, chat messages, links, and the complaint or reference number from 1930.
5. Secure your accounts Change your UPI PIN immediately across all apps. If you installed any remote-access app at a fraudster's request, uninstall it, factory-reset the device if necessary, and contact your bank to temporarily suspend UPI access.
How to Report UPI Fraud in India
The reporting process follows a clear sequence:
Step 1 → Contact your bank or payment provider Report through official bank channels and raise a transaction dispute within your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm all have in-app fraud reporting options).
Step 2 → Call 1930 The National Cybercrime Helpline connects you to the I4C framework for immediate financial fraud escalation.
Step 3 → File at cybercrime.gov.in The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal allows you to file a detailed complaint with attachments. Go to the portal, select "Report Financial Fraud," and follow the process.
Step 4 → Use NPCI's Dispute Redressal Mechanism On the NPCI portal, select UPI → Transaction → "Wrong transfer / fraud / failed but debited" → enter the Transaction ID, bank, amount, and date.
Step 5 → File an FIR For significant losses, file a written FIR at the nearest police station with all transaction details, screenshots, and communications. This is often required for legal recourse and helps authorities freeze mule accounts.
Step 6 → Report suspicious communications to Chakshu The Department of Telecommunications' Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal allows you to report suspected fraudulent calls, SMS, or WhatsApp messages that initiated the scam.
