Finance Updates Today: Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Nestle India & Rupee News

Finance Outlook India Team | Friday, 16 October 2026

India’s finance updates today, October 16, 2026 is driven by second-quarter corporate earnings, movements in the Indian rupee, rising wholesale inflation and the Reserve Bank of India’s foreign exchange measures. Technology stocks are attracting attention following quarterly results from Tech Mahindra, Wipro and Persistent Systems, while Nestlé India’s earnings have highlighted the continuing impact of food inflation and higher commodity prices on consumer businesses. The Sensex and Nifty 50 opened slightly lower on Friday following a strong recovery in the previous session. Meanwhile, the rupee is expected to strengthen against the US dollar as traders reduce bearish positions, supported by the central bank’s intervention. Developments surrounding the proposed IDBI Bank stake sale and India’s current account deficit are also important for investors monitoring the country’s financial updates.

Tech Mahindra Reports 33% Profit Growth, Announces Dividend

Tech Mahindra reported strong financial performance for the second quarter of FY27, supported by improved revenue growth, higher operating profitability and new business wins.

The information technology services company reported consolidated net profit of Rs 1,586 crore for the September quarter, representing an increase of 32.7% year-on-year. Revenue from operations rose 15.6% to Rs 16,180 crore, while earnings before interest and tax increased 40.5% to Rs 2,387 crore.

The company’s EBIT margin improved by approximately 260 basis points year-on-year to 14.8%, indicating stronger operating performance.

Tech Mahindra also declared an interim dividend of Rs 15 per share. The company reported new deal wins with a total contract value of approximately $1.023 billion, representing an increase of 25.4% year-on-year.

The company has benefited from continued deal momentum and demand for technology consulting and digital transformation services. Its results also supported the information technology sector, with Tech Mahindra shares gaining approximately 3% in early trading on Friday.

Investors will now monitor whether the company can maintain its revenue growth and margin improvement amid changing global technology spending patterns.

Wipro Reports Rs 3,200 Crore Profit as IT Services Growth Remains Limited

Wipro announced its financial results for the second quarter ended September 30, 2026, reporting consolidated net income of Rs 3,200 crore. The figure represented a year-on-year decline of 1.9%, even as overall revenue increased.

The company’s gross revenue reached Rs 24,750 crore, rising 9.1% year-on-year and 1.1% sequentially. IT services revenue stood at approximately US$2.61 billion, increasing 0.3% year-on-year but declining 0.1% from the preceding quarter.

Wipro’s IT services operating margin reached 16.5%, expanding by 0.5 percentage points sequentially. Operating cash flow stood at Rs 5,300 crore, equivalent to 165.8% of net income.

Wipro CEO and Managing Director Srini Pallia said that the strategic investments they have been making are beginning to deliver results. He also highlighted the company’s consulting-led, AI-powered strategy and its potential to create larger technology transformation opportunities for clients.

For the December quarter, Wipro expects IT services revenue to range between $2.571 billion and US$2.625 billion, translating into sequential growth guidance of between a 1.5% decline and a 0.5% increase in constant-currency terms.

The results indicate that Wipro is maintaining profitability and cash generation, although limited IT services growth and lower large-deal bookings remain important indicators for investors.

    Persistent Systems Revenue Rises 30%

Persistent Systems reported continued revenue growth for the second quarter of FY27, reflecting demand for software engineering, digital transformation and artificial intelligence-related services.

The company recorded revenue of US$487.6 million, increasing 20% year-on-year and 7.8% quarter-on-quarter. Revenue in Indian rupee terms rose 30.3% year-on-year to Rs 4,663.9 crore.

Earnings before interest and tax increased 19.5% year-on-year to approximately Rs 697.7 crore, with an EBIT margin of 15%.

However, reported profit after tax declined 25.4% year-on-year to approximately Rs 351.5 crore. Operating profit after tax, which provides a different view of underlying performance, increased 5% to approximately Rs 495.2 crore.

Persistent Systems CEO and Executive Director Sandeep Kalra said that they are pleased to report Q2 FY27 revenue of USD 487.6M, marking our 26th sequential quarter of growth.

The company also highlighted new client engagements involving artificial intelligence, legacy-system modernisation, data infrastructure and cloud-related services.

Its results suggest that technology businesses with strong exposure to digital engineering and AI-related projects continue to find growth opportunities. However, investors will need to assess the difference between revenue growth and reported earnings when evaluating the company’s financial performance.

Nestlé India Profit Jumps 36%, but Food Inflation Remains a Concern

Nestlé India reported a 35.9% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to approximately Rs 1,027 crore for the September quarter. Revenue from operations rose 20.3% to Rs 6,788 crore, supported by demand for products including Maggi noodles and Nescafé coffee.

The company also reported double-digit sales-volume growth, helped by stronger rural penetration, expansion through quick-commerce platforms and new product launches under its KitKat and Munch brands.

Despite the improvement in earnings, Nestle India shares fell sharply following the announcement, as investors assessed the results against market expectations and considered the potential impact of rising input costs.

Nestle India Chairman and Managing Director Manish Tiwary highlighted the pressure from higher commodity prices, particularly in food-related categories. Rising inflation, particularly food inflation, is a reality, he said. He also reaffirmed the company’s emphasis on food safety and product quality, stating that these were the foundation of consumer trust.

The results come as India’s consumer goods companies navigate higher prices for packaging materials, edible oils and agricultural commodities. Although demand remains supportive, rising input costs could affect profit margins if companies cannot offset them through productivity improvements, pricing adjustments or better product mixes.

Nestle India’s performance will therefore be important for investors assessing the resilience of India’s consumer sector during a period of increasing inflationary pressure.

Fairfax’s Proposed IDBI Bank Acquisition Puts Banking Sector in Focus

Canadian financial services group Fairfax Financial Holdings is set to acquire a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank in a transaction valued at approximately Rs 52,800 crore, or US$5.6 billion.

The proposed acquisition represents a significant development for India’s banking sector and foreign investment landscape. The transaction would reduce the Indian government’s holding in the bank to approximately 15%, while the Life Insurance Corporation of India would retain around 19%.

The proposed transaction values the shares at Rs 81 apiece, below the stock’s previous trading price. Following news of the deal, the shares reportedly declined by approximately 7%.

The transaction could become a significant milestone for foreign investment in India’s financial services industry. It also has implications for the government’s disinvestment programme and the future ownership structure of the bank.

Investors will be watching the completion process, regulatory approvals and the potential implications for IDBI Bank’s strategy, governance and future lending operations.

Sensex and Nifty Open Lower as Investors Book Profits

Indian equity markets opened on a subdued note on Friday after registering their strongest single-day gains in four months during the previous session. The Nifty 50 had declined 0.05% to 22,986.5, while the BSE Sensex fell 0.19% to 74,182.63.

The decline reflected profit-booking across several sectors following Thursday’s recovery. Thirteen of the 16 major sectoral indices recorded losses, while the broader small-cap and mid-cap indices declined approximately 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively.

Rupee Expected to Strengthen as RBI Measures Influence Currency Trading

The Indian rupee is expected to strengthen against the US dollar on Friday as traders reduce positions betting on further depreciation. According to market reporting, the currency was expected to open around Rs 94.75–Rs 94.80 per dollar, compared with Thursday’s close of approximately Rs 95.055 per dollar.

The movement follows a series of Reserve Bank of India measures intended to support the currency and limit excessive dollar demand.

The central bank introduced reserve requirements for certain large forward-dollar transactions. However, uncertainty over the scope of the requirements initially disrupted parts of the foreign exchange market, with some banks becoming more cautious about quoting prices.

RBI’s Foreign Exchange Intervention Raises Questions About Reserve Management

India’s foreign exchange reserves and the RBI’s efforts to support the rupee remain important subjects for financial markets. Bankers and economists estimate that the central bank has deployed approximately US$75 billion–US$80 billion through spot dollar sales and dollar-rupee swaps since June 8, 2026.

This represents roughly half of the US$140 billion secured through special measures earlier in the year, according to the estimates reported. India’s foreign exchange reserves declined by approximately US$51 billion from their early-September peak to US$734.6 billion as of October 2.

The reduction reflects continued pressure from currency-market intervention, elevated oil prices, higher US Treasury yields and foreign equity outflows.

The RBI has also introduced measures to reduce dollar demand, including a special dollar-purchase window for state-owned oil companies and additional requirements affecting certain importing businesses.

India’s Current Account Deficit Narrows to US$5.2 Billion in August

India’s current account deficit narrowed to US$5.2 billion in August 2026, compared with US$6.1 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier, according to Reserve Bank of India data reported by Business Standard.

The current account measures the flow of goods, services, income and transfers between India and the rest of the world. A deficit generally indicates that the country’s payments to the rest of the world exceed its receipts over the period.

The narrowing of the deficit is an important development because external imbalances can influence currency movements, financing requirements and investor sentiment.

However, the broader external position remains sensitive to crude oil prices, import demand, export performance and international capital flows.

    Market Outlook

India’s financial developments on Friday reflect a combination of corporate earnings opportunities and persistent macroeconomic challenges. Tech Mahindra and Persistent Systems have reported strong revenue growth, while Wipro’s results highlight the uneven recovery across the IT services industry. Nestlé India’s performance demonstrates that strong consumer demand can coexist with increasing commodity-cost pressures.

Meanwhile, the rupee and foreign exchange reserves remain central to the economic outlook. The RBI’s currency measures may support short-term stability, but rising wholesale prices and elevated oil costs continue to pose risks for businesses and consumers.

For investors, the immediate focus will remain on second-quarter earnings, company-specific guidance, currency movements and further developments in India’s inflation outlook.
