India finance news today is dominated by a weaker market opening, rising crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. Indian equities opened lower on Wednesday, September 2, with the Nifty 50 falling 0.82% to 23,858 and the Sensex declining 0.61% to 76,471.32. Brent crude climbed around 1% to $95.40 a barrel, raising concerns over inflation, the rupee and India’s import bill. Investors are also tracking corporate developments, August auto sales, foreign fund flows, IPO activity and global market cues.
Reliance Industries Enters Ice-cream Market
Reliance Industries is among the key companies in focus after its consumer-products arm, Reliance Consumer Products, entered India’s competitive ice-cream market with the launch of Bombay Creamery. The products start at Rs 10 and include cones, cups, tubs, bars and sticks. The brand will initially be available in western India before a planned nationwide rollout. The move places Reliance in direct competition with established players such as Amul, Vadilal and Kwality Wall’s.
T Krishnakumar, Director of Reliance Consumer Products, said the company built Bombay Creamery around genuine dairy ingredients and intends to commit to the category over the long term. The launch gives Reliance another consumer-facing opportunity to leverage its extensive retail and distribution network.
Maruti Suzuki Reports Strong August Sales
Maruti Suzuki remains in focus after reporting total sales of 2,19,220 units in August 2026, including domestic sales of 1,80,078 units, sales to other original equipment manufacturers of 5,298 units and exports of 33,844 units. The company also crossed the one-million-unit total-sales milestone within the first five months of FY27.
The strong annual sales growth comes as India’s automobile industry prepares for the festive season. However, Maruti shares came under pressure after investors focused on the sequential decline in sales and export performance. Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi has previously highlighted multiple growth drivers for the company as it targets further expansion in the Indian passenger-vehicle market.
EPL Promoter Completes Major Stake Sale
EPL is another stock attracting attention after promoter entity Epsilon Bidco sold its entire 26.37% stake in the company through an open-market transaction. The sale involved more than 8.44 crore shares and represents a significant change in EPL’s shareholding structure.
Welspun Corp Expands Overseas
Welspun Corp is in focus after signing an MoU with Perma-Pipe International Holdings and the Government of Jordan to explore pipe manufacturing and advanced coating facilities in Jordan. The proposed facilities are linked to the country’s National Water Carrier Project and could support water, oil, gas, energy and infrastructure projects in the region.
The development follows Welspun Corp’s recent large international order and highlights the company’s efforts to expand its global manufacturing footprint. The company’s shares had gained strongly in the previous session following the Jordan development.
Coforge Remains in Focus
Coforge continues to attract investor attention after demonstrating strong order flow, execution and margin expansion. The IT services company has significantly outperformed the broader IT index recently, with analysts pointing to its order pipeline and inorganic-growth initiatives as key factors supporting its outlook.
CEO Sudhir Singh has previously highlighted the strength of Coforge’s order intake and the potential for additional work from the company’s Encora portfolio, supporting expectations of continued growth.

Indian Markets Open Sharply Lower
The Sensex and Nifty began Wednesday’s session under pressure as escalating US-Iran tensions pushed crude prices higher. All 16 major sectors registered losses in early trade, while small-cap and mid-cap indices also declined. The Nifty is being closely watched around the 23,800–23,950 support zone, with a sustained break below this area potentially increasing downside pressure.
Crude oil crosses $95
Brent crude rose to around $95.40 a barrel after briefly reaching a near six-week high. The increase followed heightened military tensions between the US and Iran and renewed concerns about potential disruption to energy supplies. For India, prolonged high crude prices could increase the import bill, widen pressure on the current account and complicate the inflation outlook.
Rupee Strengthens to Two-month High
Despite the rise in oil prices, the Indian rupee closed Tuesday at around Rs 94.95 per US dollar, its strongest level in nearly two months. Dollar inflows and central-bank measures have supported the currency, with traders continuing to monitor the Reserve Bank of India’s role in limiting excessive volatility.
Foreign Investor Buying Remains Important
FPI inflows hit about $3.1 billion into Indian equities in August, marking the strongest monthly inflow in almost two years. The return of foreign buying has provided some support to Indian markets, although analysts continue to monitor whether the trend can be sustained amid elevated oil prices and global uncertainty.
IPO Activity Remains Strong
India’s primary market remains active, with Annu Projects scheduled to list on the BSE and NSE today. Its subdued grey-market premium, with shares reportedly trading at a discount to the Rs 99 issue price, suggests a cautious outlook ahead of the debut. Purple Style Labs is also completing the final day of its Rs 680-crore IPO, while several other issues remain active in the market.
Market Outlook
Indian stock market today is likely to remain volatile and stock-specific today as crude oil, US-Iran tensions and global risk sentiment dominate trading. At the company level, Reliance Industries, Maruti Suzuki, EPL, Welspun Corp and Coforge will remain in focus, while investors track auto sales, corporate announcements and IPO activity.
On the macroeconomic front, the rupee’s movement, foreign investment flows, crude oil prices and global bond-market cues will remain important. India’s economic growth provides a domestic cushion, but the sharp rise in oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty could continue to restrict market gains in the near term.
