India Ranks 6th as Vietnam Tops the List of most Affordable Countries for Expats

Finance Outlook India Team | Tuesday, 09 July 2024

According to a 2024 study by InterNations, Vietnam has once again been crowned the most affordable destination for expats. This is for the fourth year in a row. Witnessing a substantial growth in the areas such as quality of life, digital connectivity, housing, language, career prospects, salary, and job security, Vietnam has secured the top spot out of 53 destinations.

The survey was carried out in small numbers, but rather, over 12,000 expats from 174 territories worldwide have shared their personal satisfaction levels. The parameters on which they have ranked their happiness comprises cost of living, whether their disposable income was enough to live comfortably, and  satisfaction with their financial situation.

Here’s the list of top 10 wallet-friendly destinations for expats:

    1. Vietnam

    2. Colombia

    3. Indonesia

    4. Panama

    5. Philippines

    6. India

    7. Mexico

    8. Thailand

    9. Brazil

    10. China

This year’s list showcases a strong Asian presence, wherein, six out of the top ten spots are taken up by Asian countries. Here, Southeast Asia particularly shined out with Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand all securing the top 10 spots.

    Housing Perks in Southeast Asia

Speaking of the housing perks in Southeast Asia, Kathrin Chudoba, Chief Marketing Officer for InterNations, highlighted “Housing is a big plus in all four countries: Thailand ranks 1st, Vietnam 2nd, Philippines 5th, and Indonesia 8th. Most expats agree that it’s easy to find housing, and they are happy with how affordable it is.”

    Balancing Work-life

Also to note, the report has also revealed an interesting tidbit about work-life balance in Vietnam. As per the report, it seems that ‘work-life balance trump's career advancement’ here.  Compared to the global average of 57 percent, less than half  which comes about 46 percent of the expat population in Vietnam works full-time. A British expat also shared, “Life here is stress-free for me, it is a wonderful change from my work life, which was very consuming and hectic.”

Taking this into consideration, if someone is looking forward to moving abroad for a more affordable and enjoyable lifestyle, Vietnam would surely be the perfect destination. As Vietnam is known for affordable living, easy housing, and a relaxed work-life balance, what more can you ask for?
