Indian top family businesses (300 family businesses) are now valued at Rs 138 lakh crore ($1.46 trillion), with the Ambani family retaining the top spot at Rs 25.8 lakh crore, according to the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses list.

Indian Family Businesses Now Bigger Than Several European Economies
The combined valuation of Indian top family businesses is now greater than the GDPs of several European nations. If this list is considered as a country on its own, it will become the world's 18th biggest economy by GDP, bigger than the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Poland, Hurun India founder and chief researcher Anas Rahman Junaid told. This reflects the importance that these enterprises have today in the Indian economy and abroad.
The Ambani family led by Mukesh Ambani led the pact as the wealthiest business family in India, despite losing 8.5% of its wealth during the period.

The Gautam Adani family of Ahmedabad was the most wealthiest first generation entrepreneur family with net worth of Rs 19.6 lakh crore followed by Sunil Bharti Mittal, promoter of Airtel with net worth of Rs 12.1 lakh crore and Kumar Mangalam Birla with net worth of Rs 8.14 lakh crore.
The networth of the Ahuja family of Shahi Exports increased by a whopping 352% to Rs 37,500 crore over the past three years. Fortunately, the Shashikant Bhalchandra Garware family of Garware Hi-Tech Films (GHF) saw the biggest jump in ranking with its fortune more than trebled to Rs 15,600 crore.
The absolute value creation of the Jindal family was the highest in the last three years, with the family's net worth increasing by Rs 3.3 lakh crore to Rs 8.02 lakh crore.

Generational Transition Reshapes Family Business Governance
The report also emphasizes on the growing professionalization of family businesses in India. Now, 70% of these businesses are being managed by the second generation, 57 are in the third generation and 20 are already in the fourth generation.
There is a growing trend for many business groups to adopt more professional governance arrangements, formal succession planning and wider institutionalization to ensure the continuity of growth and stability in the future.
