Next GST Council meeting is Scheduled to be Held on June 22

Finance Outlook India Team | Thursday, 13 June 2024

As the last meeting was held on October 7, 2023, June 22 will be the date when the next Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting will be held. Furthermore, it was reported that the GST Council will not meet until the new government is formed at the Center level.

The central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a post on X stating, "The 53rd meeting of the GST Council will be held on 22nd June, 2024 at New Delhi."

Attended by Finance MoS Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, the Revenue Secretary, Chairman CBIC, Member CM, Member GST, Member TP and senior officers from Union Government and States, the last meeting was presided over by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Furthermore,  if we speak of another meeting which was held in October last year, the GST Council had decided to impose a 28 percent levy on sectors such as online gaming, casinos, and horse racing.

The council postponed the review of the 28% levy to be imposed on the proceeds from online gaming. This was later done in the GST meeting held in March.

The online gaming industry strongly opposed the decision, citing potential significant losses from increased taxes, after the 28 percent GST rule was announced. Leaders of 125+ companies had written to the government so as to outline concerns pertaining to the 28 percent GST impact on their operations.

In that timeframe, the former Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrashekhar had said that his ministry will request the GST Council to review their decision. The minister stated, “We will go back to the GST Council and may request their consideration on the facts of the new regulatory framework."
