PhonePe has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI that brings ChatGPT-powered capabilities directly into its app ecosystem, marking a significant convergence of AI and fintech in India.
Key Highlights
- PhonePe integrates ChatGPT to offer AI-powered assistance across travel, shopping, and app navigation.
- OpenAI partnership expands generative AI access in India without enabling AI-driven UPI payments.
This integration will span across the main PhonePe consumer app, the PhonePe for Business app, and the Indus Appstore—PhonePe’s Android marketplace. With over 600 million registered users, as stated in the press release, PhonePe is positioning this as a way to scale AI adoption among a broad user base.
Unlike a full ChatGPT client, PhonePe will offer specific, contextual AI features rather than exposing the entire interface. Users can leverage this AI-powered assistant for practical tasks, such as planning travel, comparing merchants or evaluating product recommendations, right within the app.
PhonePe’s CTO, Rahul Chari, said the collaboration builds on the company’s experience in scaling digital services, enabling new use cases by combining generative AI with its existing infrastructure. From OpenAI’s perspective, this partnership helps make its consumer AI more accessible in India, aligning with its broader mission of democratizing AI.
By embedding AI conversational prompts in payment flows and discovery paths, PhonePe hopes to make routine tasks smarter. For instance, when a user is browsing for travel, AI might suggest budget flights or itinerary ideas. For merchants using PhonePe for Business, future iterations could include AI-powered tools for creating catalog descriptions, offer copy, or customer responses.
However, PhonePe clarifies that this phase of the rollout is strictly for conversational assistance — it will not support payment authorization through ChatGPT, meaning AI will not independently execute UPI transactions.

Overall, this collaboration represents a landmark in India’s digital payments sector. It could accelerate the adoption of generative AI in day-to-day consumer experiences, turning a UPI-based payments app into a smarter, more context-aware platform. With AI features integrated contextually rather than as a separate service, PhonePe could redefine how users access and consume financial, travel, and shopping-related information.
