    Stock market shut down, July 17: NSE, BSE closed today due to Muharram

    The Indian stock exchanges will be closed today, July 17, 2024, for the Muharram holiday, which commemorates the beginning of the Islamic calendar's first month and is one of Islam's four holiest months. What is currently closed?

    The equities, equity derivatives, and SLB divisions will be closed for the whole day. The currency and commodities derivatives markets will also be closed on Wednesday.

    However, the commodities derivatives and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) segments will only be closed for the first half of the day, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. For these portions, trading will continue in the evening session between 5:00 PM and 11:30 PM/11:55 PM.

    The BSE Sensex reached a record high of 80,898 intraday on Tuesday before closing at 80,717, up 52 points or 0.06 percent. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 reached a new high of 24,661, before completing the day at 24,613, up 26 points or 0.11 percent. Fag-end selling in Kotak Bank, Reliance Industries, Ultratech Cement, NTPC, L&T, Power Grid, SBI, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, and HDFC Bank dragged down the leading indices. In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap fell 0.29 percent, while the BSE SmallCap rose 0.32 percent.

    Upcoming holidays In 2024, the NSE and BSE have set 14 stock market vacations to coincide with various festivals and notable events.

    These holidays will have an influence on market activities on important dates such as Independence Day (August 15), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Diwali Pratipada (November 1), Gurunanak Jayanti (November 15), and Christmas (December 25). Investors and traders should be aware of these closures as they plan their activity in the Indian stock market for the rest of the year.
