Tax Dept Extends ITR Filing Deadline Again: Relief for Taxpayers

Finance Outlook India Team | Tuesday, 16 September 2025

The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) has been extended yet again. The new ITR filing deadline is September 16, 2025, as announced by the Ministry of Finance.

    Key Highlights

    • Income Tax Department extends ITR filing deadline to September 16, 2025, citing portal glitches and technical issues.
    • Taxpayers urged to use correct return forms and documents as deadline extended for non-audit filers.

This second extension of the ITR filing deadline comes amid a slew of issues, glitches, and server time outs on the e-filing ITR portal, as reported by numerous taxpayers and chartered accountants.

The Income Tax Department announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, which was originally due on July 31, 2025, has been extended to September 15, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from September 15 to September 16, 2025. To allow for changes in utilities, the e-filing portal will be in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on September 16, 2025."

It is worth noting that the deadline for filing ITRs was once extended due to a delay in the release of income tax forms.

Previously, the ITR filing deadline was July 31, 2025 for fiscal year 2025-26 (FY 2024-25). This deadline was pushed back to September 15, 2025, and the second deadline has now been extended once more.
