Vedanta Expands Gamsberg Zinc Mine Capacity in South Africa
The investment is focused on the Gamsberg zinc mine in South Africa's Northern Cape province, the flagship operation of Vedanta Zinc International (VZI). The second phase of the mine's expansion was inaugurated on Sunday by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar.
With the expansion, Vedanta aims to increase its total annual zinc production capacity to 3 million tonnes. Its Indian subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc, is targeted to produce 2 million tonnes annually, while Vedanta Zinc International is expected to contribute 1 million tonnes.
Vedanta's $1.5 Billion South Africa Investment Commitment
The latest investment is part of Vedanta's broader commitment of ZAR 21 billion, equivalent to nearly $1.5 billion, announced at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference. The company described the Gamsberg expansion as one of the largest mining investments in South Africa during the current decade.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the investment and said the government would work with Vedanta and other partners to address the company's requirements. He also welcomed Vedanta's ambition to establish zinc smelting capacity in the Northern Cape, noting the progress from investment commitment to construction and production.

Vedanta Strengthens Its Position in the Global Zinc Market
The expansion supports Vedanta's efforts to increase production and build a stronger presence in the global zinc industry. Zinc plays a significant role in industrial and infrastructure development, particularly in galvanisation, where it protects steel from corrosion and extends its service life.
The metal is widely used across construction, automotive and manufacturing industries, linking zinc demand to infrastructure development and industrial activity.
Priya Agarwal-Hebbar said the Gamsberg expansion reflects Vedanta's commitment to South Africa and its ambition to develop a significant zinc and industrial hub in the region.
As Vedanta expands its operations across India and South Africa, the increased capacity at Gamsberg is expected to contribute to its long-term production ambitions and strengthen its presence in the international zinc market.
