Finance News Today: Latest Markets and Corporate Updates

Finance Outlook India Team | Friday, 18 September 2026

Indian finance news today points out a positive start as the market opened higher on Friday as easing crude oil prices and bargain buying provided some relief after recent volatility. The Nifty 50 rose 0.20% to 23,315.80 while the Sensex gained 0.22% to 74,474.19 in early trade. However, gains remained measured as investors assessed continued Middle East tensions, foreign fund outflows and the US Federal Reserve’s recent rate hike. The rupee is expected to open slightly stronger around Rs 95.75–Rs 95.80 against the US dollar, while Brent crude has eased to around $104 a barrel. Corporate developments around Tata Sons, Bharat Forge, Bharat Electronics, Wipro and Oil India are also expected to influence individual stocks today.

Tata Sons Leadership and Listing Debate Intensifies

Tata Sons is at the centre of corporate developments today after its board approved a fresh five-year term for N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman and agreed to proceed with preparations for a potential listing of the holding company. Both decisions, however, face opposition from Tata Trusts, which controls around 66% of Tata Sons.

Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata has opposed Chandrasekaran’s reappointment and has also said the Trusts have not agreed to a Tata Sons listing. The Trusts have asked the board to explore all available options and seek further engagement with the Reserve Bank of India. Noel Tata has argued that a listing could alter the long-standing ownership structure of the group.

The developments are already affecting listed Tata Group companies. TCS, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Tata Investment Corporation and Tata Chemicals fell between 2.5% and 7% in early Friday trading after rising sharply in the previous session.

Bharat Forge Launches Rs 2,000 Crore QIP

Bharat Forge has launched a qualified institutional placement to raise capital, setting a floor price of Rs 1,947.70 per share. Media reports indicate that the company could raise around Rs 2,000 crore through the issue and may offer a discount of up to 5% to institutional investors.

The fund-raising comes as Bharat Forge continues to expand across defence, aerospace, automotive and industrial manufacturing. The company is also among the stocks in focus following its recent business developments.

Bharat Electronics Secures Rs 648 Crore in Additional Orders

State-owned Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has secured additional orders worth Rs 648 crore since August 26. The orders cover a broad range of defence and technology products, including laser-based infrared jammers, communication equipment, cybersecurity solutions, thermal imagers, transducers, AI-based software solutions, TR modules, upgrades, spares and services.

The latest order inflows add to BEL’s defence-electronics pipeline as domestic procurement and localisation remain important themes for India’s defence manufacturing sector.

Wipro Launches STO360 With Aramco and SAP

Wipro has launched Wipro STO360, a new solution developed with Aramco and SAP to help asset-intensive businesses manage shutdown, turnaround and outage activities.

The solution uses SAP Business Technology Platform and Wipro’s technology capabilities to provide real-time visibility, improve collaboration and support operational decision-making across maintenance programmes.

Vinay Firake, CEO - APMEA at Wipro, said, “Asset heavy industries need to embrace AI-led transformation quickly and at scale,” citing increasing complexity, regulatory expectations and the need for operational excellence. He said Wipro STO360 combines industry expertise, Wipro Intelligence and cloud-native engineering capabilities to help enterprises improve asset reliability and operational efficiency.

Oil India Plans Rs 15,000 Crore Deepwater Exploration Programme

Oil India plans to invest around Rs 15,000 crore over the next three years to drill deepwater exploration wells across the Andaman, Krishna-Godavari, Mahanadi and Kerala-Konkan sedimentary basins.

Oil India Limited Chairman and Managing Director Ranjit Rath said, "The company plans to significantly increase deepwater exploration with support from the government’s Samudra Manthan initiative. The government scheme provides financial assistance for eligible deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration."

Ranjit Rath also said Oil India is evaluating overseas opportunities in oil, gas and critical minerals and plans to participate in upcoming OALP bidding rounds. The company is targeting around 10 million tonnes of oil equivalent of oil and gas production by the end of the decade.

Sensex and Nifty Open Higher as Crude Oil Eases

Indian stock market opened higher on Friday, with the Nifty gaining 0.20% and Sensex rising 0.22% in early trade. Fifteen of the 16 major sectors were in positive territory, while mid-cap and small-cap indices also gained around 0.2%.

The improvement came as Brent crude fell around 0.9% to approximately $104 a barrel. Investors are assessing whether alternative routes for Middle Eastern crude shipments can reduce concerns about supply disruptions.

Rupee May Get Support From Oil and NSE IPO Inflows

The rupee is expected to open slightly stronger on Friday after settling at Rs 95.93 against the US dollar on Thursday. Falling oil prices and anticipated foreign inflows linked to the NSE IPO are providing some support.

According to reports, traders expect the rupee to open around Rs 95.75–Rs 95.80. However, dollar demand from importers could limit the currency’s recovery. BofA Global Research has also highlighted elevated oil prices and a seasonally widening current-account deficit as risks for the rupee, potentially requiring sustained capital inflows or RBI support.

FII Selling Continues While DIIs Provide Support

Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers in Indian equities on September 17, selling shares worth Rs 3,208.76 crore. Domestic institutional investors, meanwhile, bought equities worth Rs 3,617.75 crore.

For September so far, FII selling stands at about Rs 7,640 crore net, while DII purchases are around Rs 35,199 crore, according to market data. The contrasting flows highlight the continued importance of domestic institutional demand in offsetting foreign selling pressure.

NSE IPO Gets 43% Subscription on Day One

The National Stock Exchange IPO received bids for around 3.8 crore shares against approximately 8.9 crore shares on offer on its first day of post-anchor bidding, translating into about 43% subscription.

The Rs 22,562-crore issue is among India’s largest public offerings. The IPO is scheduled to remain open until September 21, with institutional participation expected to be closely watched as the issue progresses.

The IPO is also being viewed as a potential source of foreign portfolio inflows that could provide some support to the rupee.

RBI OMO Sale Receives Rs 66,590 Crore in Bids

The Reserve Bank of India’s first open-market operation sale of the year received bids worth ₹66,590 crore against the notified amount of Rs 50,000 crore. The operation is aimed at absorbing surplus liquidity from the banking system.

The RBI accepted bonds at yields above prevailing market levels, while additional liquidity-absorption measures are expected in the coming weeks. The move comes as the central bank manages liquidity conditions alongside currency and inflation-related pressures.

    Market Outlook

Indian markets are beginning Friday on a firmer note as crude oil prices retreat and global equities gain, but several risks remain. The rupee is still close to the ₹96-per-dollar level, foreign investors remain net sellers and US monetary policy continues to influence emerging-market flows.

The Tata Sons leadership and listing developments are likely to remain a major corporate-market theme, particularly for Tata Group companies. At the same time, Bharat Forge’s QIP, BEL’s fresh orders, Wipro’s technology partnership and Oil India’s deepwater investment plans highlight ongoing corporate activity across defence, technology and energy.

The primary market is also expected to remain active, with the NSE IPO entering its second day and other issues such as Hero Motors and Jindal Supreme continuing to attract investor attention.
