India’s finance updates today are focused on second-quarter earnings, banking sector performance, rising crude oil prices and foreign investor activity on Monday, October 19, 2026. The Sensex and Nifty 50 opened largely flat as investors assessed results from HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and IDBI Bank. Meanwhile, the rupee is expected to remain relatively stable following its strongest weekly performance since March, supported by recent Reserve Bank of India (RBI) measures.
HDFC Bank Reports 4.7% Profit Growth
HDFC Bank reported a 4.7% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to Rs 19,510 crore for the second quarter of FY27. Net interest income rose 9.7% to Rs 34,619 crore, while advances increased 16.3% year-on-year. The bank’s gross non-performing asset ratio improved to 1.11% from 1.17% in the previous quarter. The lender also announced that Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha would step down at the end of December. Anup Bagchi is scheduled to take over as Managing Director and CEO on October 27.
ICICI Bank Reports 20% Profit Increase
ICICI Bank reported a 20.1% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to Rs 14,843 crore for the September quarter. Net interest income increased 17.7%, reflecting continued growth in its core banking business. The results placed the private sector lender among the stronger performers in the latest earnings season. Investors are monitoring the bank’s loan growth, asset quality and profitability as elevated interest rates and economic uncertainty influence lending conditions.
Axis Bank Net Profit Rises 38%
Axis Bank reported a 38% year-on-year increase in net profit to Rs 7,003 crore for the September quarter, supported by loan growth and higher interest income. Net interest income rose 11.8% to Rs 15,371 crore, while advances increased 23% year-on-year. The bank’s net interest margin stood at 3.36%, or 3.47% excluding the impact of foreign currency non-resident bank deposits. The results highlight continued credit demand, although the reported profit fell short of some market expectations.
IDBI Bank Profit Declines 39%
IDBI Bank reported a 39.2% year-on-year decline in net profit to approximately Rs 2,205 crore for the September quarter, compared with Rs 3,627 crore in the corresponding period last year. Net interest income also declined sharply in some reported comparisons, reflecting pressure on the bank’s core earnings. The fall in profit was partly influenced by a high base in the previous year, when the bank benefited from an exceptional gain. Investors are also monitoring developments surrounding the proposed Fairfax acquisition of the lender.

Sensex and Nifty Open Nearly Flat
Indian equity markets opened with limited movement on Monday as investors evaluated bank earnings and rising crude oil prices. At 9:18 a.m. IST, the Nifty 50 slipped 0.02% to 23,140.5, while the Sensex declined 0.05% to 74,691.38. Although benchmark indices remained relatively stable, small-cap and mid-cap stocks recorded modest losses. Investors are balancing encouraging corporate earnings against concerns about inflation, geopolitical developments and foreign capital outflows.
Rupee Outlook Improves After RBI Measures
The Indian rupee is expected to trade within a range of Rs 94 to Rs 95.50 against the US dollar during the holiday-shortened trading week. The currency closed at Rs 94.96 on Friday after gaining approximately 2% during the week. Recent RBI measures have increased the cost of certain foreign exchange transactions and provided a dedicated dollar-supply window for state-owned oil companies. Market participants will continue monitoring crude oil prices and foreign portfolio investment flows for further direction.
Government Bond Yields Remain Elevated
India’s benchmark 10-year government bond yield closed at 7.3789% on Friday, marking its ninth consecutive weekly increase. Rising oil prices, inflation concerns and expectations of further monetary tightening have contributed to the upward movement. Krishna Bhimavarapu, Asia-Pacific economist at State Street Investment Management, said that a cumulative 100-basis-point tightening by June could help the RBI address emerging price pressures while maintaining its inflation-fighting credibility. These developments could influence borrowing costs for businesses, banks and the government.
Foreign Investors Withdraw Rs 52,100 Crore in October
Foreign portfolio investors have withdrawn approximately Rs 52,100 crore from Indian equities during October so far, exceeding the Rs 35,861 crore withdrawn in September. Rising crude oil prices, higher US bond yields and a stronger US dollar have contributed to investor caution. Continued foreign selling could weigh on equity valuations and the rupee, although domestic institutional investment may help cushion the impact. Market participants will closely watch overseas fund flows as the September-quarter earnings season progresses.
Crude Oil and Quarterly Earnings to Drive Markets
Crude oil prices remain a major concern for India’s economic outlook, with Brent crude reaching approximately US$110 per barrel last Friday amid geopolitical tensions. Higher oil prices could increase India’s import bill, add to inflationary pressures and affect corporate margins. Meanwhile, more than 200 companies are scheduled to announce their September-quarter results during the week. Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Zinc and Union Bank of India are among the companies scheduled to report results on October 19, while Infosys and several other major companies are expected to announce earnings later in the week.
Market Outlook
India’s financial markets are navigating mixed signals as strong earnings from ICICI Bank and Axis Bank contrast with more modest profit growth at HDFC Bank and a decline at IDBI Bank. Meanwhile, crude oil prices, foreign investor outflows and elevated bond yields remain important risks. Investors will continue monitoring corporate results, RBI policy signals and currency movements to assess the direction of Indian equities during the current earnings season.
