In keeping with the concept of bringing green energy to consumers, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Interim Budget statement on Thursday that up to 10 million homes nationwide will receive rooftop solar power for free electricity.
One crore families will be able to receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month through rooftop solarization. Savings of up to Rs 15–18,000 per year for homes through the sale of excess solar electricity to distribution companies, according to Sitharaman.
Installing rooftop solar on a residential property requires a maximum capacity of 10 kW. Based on an approximate industry estimate, systems of this kind can produce nearly 300 units, enabling users to receive free electricity and save a comparable amount on grid-connected electricity bills. If solar power generation exceeds usage, it can be put into the grid and a family can get the equivalent amount of money from a power distribution business (discom).
In order to reach the targets for green energy, the government is now concentrating more on decentralized solar. To address the inefficiencies and expand its reach throughout the nation, it is being considered to transfer the initiative to REC Limited, a prominent power industry financier. REC has previously served as the central authority for a number of the government's key energy access programmes, the most prominent of which are the PM-SAUBHAGYA and DDUGJY programmes for rural electrification.
