GTRI Warns of Up to 100% US Tariffs Over Russian Oil Purchases

Think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) warned that the US Senate's approval of a bill on Russia sanctions could expose Indian exports to additional tariffs of up to 100% if India continues buying Russian crude oil. Russia supplied 30.3% of India's crude imports in FY2026, worth $40.8 billion, helping reduce import costs and contain inflation. GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said India should not allow tariff threats to determine its energy policy, stating, "As long as Russian crude remains commercially attractive, India should continue buying it. Differences with Washington must be managed through firm negotiation - not extending unilateral concessions that raise India's energy costs and weaken its strategic autonomy."

The court noted that with vehicles remaining uninsured beyond the earlier mandated period, accident victims and their families often had no recourse to adequate compensation.

Foreign portfolio investors have continued to be net sellers in the Indian stock market through the year, despite recent inflows in select sessions, reflecting a cautious overall stance from overseas investors even as domestic market sentiment has shown pockets of resilience.
