India's Forex Reserves Rise $1.08 Bn to $676.24 Bn: RBI Data

Finance Outlook India Team | Saturday, 25 July 2026

India's forex reserves rose by $1.08 billion to $676.237 billion for the week ended July 17, extending their upward trend, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

    Key Highlights

    • India's forex reserves rose $1.08 billion to $676.24 billion for the week ended July 17.
    • Foreign currency assets increased $4.549 billion to $551.057 billion, while gold reserves fell $3.48 billion.

The latest increase follows a gain of $964 million in the previous reporting week, when the country's forex reserves climbed to $675.157 billion. The RBI's weekly statistical supplement showed that the country's forex reserves continued to strengthen after recovering from the declines witnessed earlier this year amid heightened global uncertainties.

    Recovering From Earlier Declines

India's forex reserves had surged to an all-time high of $728.494 billion during the week ended February 27. Since then, escalating tensions in the Middle East put pressure on the rupee, prompting the RBI to intervene in the foreign exchange market through dollar sales, which led to a moderation in the country's reserve position over the following weeks. The latest two weekly gains suggest this trend may now be reversing.

Foreign Currency Assets Lead the Rise

For the same period, foreign currency assets, a major component of the reserves, increased by $4.549 billion to $551.057 billion. Expressed in dollar terms, foreign currency assets include effects of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units, such as the euro, pound, and yen, held in the foreign exchange reserves.

Gold Reserves Decline, SDRs Edge Higher

The value of gold reserves dropped by $3.48 billion to $101.749 billion during the week, the RBI said. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) were up by $44 million at $18.67 billion, the apex bank noted.

    Why Forex Reserves Matter

Foreign exchange reserves, comprising foreign currency assets, gold reserves, SDRs, and the reserve tranche position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), serve as a key buffer against external shocks and help support the stability of the rupee. The  Reserve Bank of India has consistently maintained that it remains vigilant about developments in the foreign exchange market and intervenes only to curb excessive volatility and ensure orderly market conditions, without targeting any specific exchange rate.

A healthy level of forex reserves enhances India's ability to meet external payment obligations, finance imports, and cushion the economy against global financial and geopolitical uncertainties.
