India’s Rich List 2026 has seen a major reshuffle, with Gautam Adani and family reclaiming the top spot from Mukesh Ambani as India’s billionaire population reached a record 391. Gautam Adani Overtakes Mukesh Ambani Again
Gautam Adani’s return to the top marks another reversal in the closely watched contest between the two business families.
Gautam Adani and family had overtaken Ambani in 2022, but were overtaken again in 2023, outran him last year in 2024 and were overtaken once again in 2025. But in the 2026 list, Adani is again at number one.
The wealth of Gautam Adani also has been more volatile than over the time period. The ranking indicates that it earned Rs 11.62 lakh crore in 2024, but had slipped to Rs 8.15 lakh crore and is back at Rs 9.23 lakh crore this year.
Gautam Ambani's worth has been increased from Rs 2.58 lakh crore in 2017 to Rs 10.15 lakh crore in 2024, but has dropped back to Rs 8.63 lakh crore in the latest list.
LN Mittal Jumps to Third on India’s Rich List
LN Mittal and family recorded one of the biggest movements among the country's wealthiest business families. They climbed eight places to third, with wealth nearly doubling to Rs 3.39 lakh crore, a 93% increase.
The increase was linked to higher European steel prices and trade protection measures affecting the sector.
Cyrus Poonawalla and family retained fourth position with wealth of Rs 3.03 lakh crore, up 23%.
Roshni Nadar Malhotra and family moved to fifth from the previous ranking's position, with wealth of Rs 2.79 lakh crore. She continued to be India's wealthiest woman.
Anil Agarwal and Samir Mehta Enter India’s Top 10
There were some big shifts in the bottom half of the top 10 as well.
Anil Agarwal and his family jumped to 9th place with their net worth increasing by 87% to Rs 2.08 lakh crore. Samir Mehta and family entered the top 10 from at 52% from their previous net worth of Rs 1.25 lakh crore to become net-worth Rs 1.89 lakh crore.
Azim Premji's family stood 6th with a net worth of Rs 2.63 lakh crore while Kumar Mangalam Birla's family was 8th with a net worth of Rs 2.69 lakh crore. Dilip Shanghvi & family were the 7th Indians with Rs 2.65 lakh crore.

India’s Billionaire Population Hits Record 391
The top-10 isn't the only thing that dominates India's Rich List. The number of Indian billionaires in dollar terms has risen to a new high with 391, which is 27 more than last year, and a lot more than 237 five years ago.
The bigger list from Hurun includes 1,810 individuals with Rs 1,000 crore and above in their fortune, an addition of 128 individuals compared to a year earlier. In total, they have assets worth Rs 187.5 lakh crore, or approximately $1.96 trillion.
AI Emerges as a New Wealth-Creation Sector
Artificial intelligence has made its debut as a standalone category in the M3M Hurun India Rich List.
The 2026 ranking includes 19 individuals and families associated with AI, with combined wealth of Rs 3.07 lakh crore. Fifteen of these were new entrants, highlighting the growing contribution of AI businesses to wealth creation.
The list also features Bengaluru-based QpiAI founder Nagendra Nagaraja as India's first quantum-computing entrant, with wealth of Rs 1,700 crore.
Self-Made Entrepreneurs Account for 70% of the List
Empreunership is a growing trend in the creation of wealth. Some 70% of the people on the list are self-made entrepreneurs, as opposed to 55% five years ago.
The ranking shows that the most entrants by sector were in the industrial sector, followed by chemicals and pharmaceuticals. There were also 131 women, 33 of whom were dollar billionaires, on the list. Roshni Nadar Malhotra was the wealthiest woman on the list.
Mumbai is the Largest Wealth Hub in India
As for the top wealthiest cities, Mumbai continues as the top city by having 465 people on the list. New Delhi was in second place with 236, followed by Bengaluru at 129.
It further pointed out that the global wealth footprint of India is increasing, with 156 of its members residing abroad. Of those, 90 were in the U.S. and 31 in the UAE.
The study shows that the wealth spectrum in India is widening with the new entrants in the category of technology, AI and new-age entrepreneurship alongside the dominant industrial families.
