India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem saw a notable shift in June, with WhatsApp overtaking CRED in transaction volume for the first time, processing 150.48 million transactions compared with CRED's 141.78 million, according to NPCI June UPI Data.
Key Highlights
- WhatsApp overtook CRED in UPI transaction volume, processing 150.48 million transactions in June.
- PhonePe processed 10.48 billion transactions, retaining its position as India's largest UPI platform for the fourth straight month.
The crossover comes in the same month that CRED founder Kunal Shah stepped down from the fintech firm to take over as the global CEO of WhatsApp, with Miten Sampat named interim CEO of CRED following Shah's move. In May, CRED had processed 157 million UPI transactions, ahead of WhatsApp's more than 150 million transactions — making June's role reversal notable given the leadership transition.
Despite its lower transaction volume in June, CRED processed transactions worth Rs 55,117 crore, accounting for 1.91% of UPI transaction value. WhatsApp's transaction value stood at ₹11,392 crore, translating to a 0.39% share — highlighting that while WhatsApp now leads on volume, CRED continues to dominate on average transaction size.
PhonePe Maintains Market Leadership
PhonePe retained lead in the UPI ecosystem with 10.48 billion transactions in June, compared with 10.73 billion in May. This marked the fourth consecutive month that PhonePe processed more than 10 billion UPI transactions, having first crossed the milestone in March 2026.
