On Tuesday, OpenAI, lead by Sam Altman, announced ChatGPT Go, a low-cost membership package tailored to Indian users that includes increased message limits, image production, file uploading capabilities, and chat capacity. These features, which are enabled by the company's latest model, the GPT-5, will also provide improved support for native Indian languages, according to a press statement.
Key Highlights
- India-first ChatGPT Go ₹399/month offers 10× messages, image generations, file uploads, and 2× memory over the free tier.
- Powered by GPT-5 + UPI payments: Low-cost, India-exclusive plan includes GPT-5 access, local language support, and UPI checkout.
The new membership plan would cost Rs 399 per month, with the option for users to pay using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). "ChatGPT Go is designed for people in India who want greater access to ChatGPT's advanced capabilities at a more affordable price," according to a release from OpenAI.
Currently, consumers in India can buy the ChatGPT Plus membership for Rs 1,999 per month and the ChatGPT Pro subscription for Rs 19,900 per month. "We've been inspired by how millions of people in India use ChatGPT on a daily basis for learning, work, creativity, and problem-solving," said Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI.
The latest offering in India is consistent with Altman's statement that the company will develop additional products and services tailored exclusively to the country. India, now ChatGPT's second-biggest market, may soon become the company's largest market globally, given OpenAI's quick expansion in the country, Altman stated during the GPT-5 unveiling.

"What Indian residents are accomplishing with ChatGPT is truly extraordinary, since it is being integrated into people's lives and enterprises, leading to the formation of new companies. We are particularly focused on bringing goods to India and collaborating with local partners to make artificial intelligence perform well in India," he stated.
Earlier this year, in February, Altman stated during his visit to India that the number of ChatGPT users in the nation tripled in 2024. In May, OpenAI announced that data from Indian ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and OpenAI API platform users would be held in the nation.
The move was intended to assist Indian companies that use these products in meeting local data sovereignty standards while incorporating OpenAI's solutions into their operations and developing new artificial intelligence applications.
