Paytm, operated by One97 Communications Ltd., has expanded its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) access to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) across 12 countries, allowing them to use their international mobile numbers for seamless transactions in India.
Key Highlights
- Paytm enables NRIs from 12 countries to use UPI with international mobile numbers for transactions.
- NRIs can now link NRE/NRO accounts, pay Indian merchants, and shop online without Indian SIM cards.
The initiative enables NRIs from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, France, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia to link their Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) bank accounts to Paytm and make UPI payments directly.
With this update, NRIs can now pay Indian merchants, scan UPI QR codes, transfer funds, and shop online on Indian platforms—all without requiring an Indian SIM card or incurring foreign exchange conversion fees. The rollout, currently in beta, aims to strengthen digital connectivity for Indians abroad and provide them with an efficient, cost-effective way to participate in India’s thriving UPI ecosystem.

This development follows the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and NPCI’s efforts to broaden UPI adoption globally and support Indian diaspora needs. By extending its UPI services internationally, Paytm continues to reinforce its position as a pioneer in digital payments, offering greater convenience and inclusion to millions of NRIs worldwide.
