SBI Cash Withdrawal Rules to Change from Oct 1 for BSBD Account Holder

SBI Cash Withdrawal Rules to Change from Oct 1 for BSBD Account Holder

Finance Outlook India Team | Friday, 21 August 2026

SBI cash withdrawal rules is set to change from Oct 1 for Basic Savings Bank Deposit - BSBD account holders,  with the bank introducing a charge of Rs 15 plus GST for cash withdrawals beyond four transactions a month. The change is particularly relevant for customers who rely heavily on cash and use Aadhaar-enabled payment services to withdraw money.

    Key Highlights

    • SBI cash withdrawal rules will change from October 1, charging Rs 15 plus GST beyond four transactions.
    • AePS withdrawals will now count toward the four free monthly transactions, though digital transactions remain free.

The first four cash withdrawals in a month will continue to remain free. However, SBI is changing how these four free transactions are counted - earlier, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions were excluded from the monthly limit, but from October 1, they will also be counted toward it. The bank has clarified that digital transactions will continue to remain free without any limit.

What Is Changing from October 1?

According to SBI's cash withdrawal rules, BSBD account holders will continue to get four free cash withdrawals every month. Once this limit is crossed, each additional cash withdrawal will attract a charge of Rs 15 plus applicable GST.

The four free transactions will now cover cash withdrawals across multiple channels, including:

    • SBI and other bank ATMs
    • Cash withdrawals at SBI branches
    • AePS cash withdrawal transactions

This marks a change from the existing structure, under which AePS transactions were not counted toward the four-transaction limit. For example, if a customer makes three ATM or branch cash withdrawals and then uses AePS to withdraw cash, all four will count toward the monthly free limit under the revised rules. A fifth cash withdrawal in the same month would attract a charge of Rs 15 plus GST.

    Digital Payments Remain Free

The change does not mean SBI BSBD customers will have to pay for digital banking transactions. SBI has confirmed that digital transactions will continue to remain free without any restriction, including electronic methods of moving money such as UPI, NEFT and RTGS. This means customers who primarily use digital channels for payments and transfers can avoid the additional cash withdrawal charges altogether.

For customers who frequently withdraw cash, however, the revised treatment of AePS transactions could make it easier to reach the four-transaction limit sooner than before.

    Why BSBD Accounts Are Different

BSBD accounts are designed primarily to promote financial inclusion by allowing customers to maintain a savings account without a minimum balance requirement. SBI's basic savings account comes with a free RuPay ATM-cum-debit card and no annual maintenance charge, while customers can also receive money through electronic payment channels such as NEFT and RTGS without charges.

There is, however, one important condition attached to these accounts - a customer holding an SBI BSBD account cannot simultaneously maintain another SBI savings bank account. If an existing savings account is held, it generally needs to be closed within 30 days of opening the BSBD account.

    What Should Customers Watch For?

The practical impact of this change will largely depend on how frequently an account holder needs physical cash. For customers who primarily use UPI, cards or other digital payment methods, the revised rule is likely to have little practical impact, since digital transactions remain free.

For customers who depend heavily on cash withdrawals, however, the change could increase monthly banking costs - particularly since AePS transactions, often used to access cash through Aadhaar authentication, will now count toward the four free withdrawals. Customers are advised to track their cash withdrawals across all channels collectively, rather than treating AePS, branch and ATM withdrawals as separate limits.

What Remains Free Under the BSBD Account?

Despite the revised cash withdrawal rule, several basic facilities will continue to remain free of charge, including the RuPay debit card and electronic receipt of funds through NEFT and RTGS. The account will also continue to offer its key benefit of no minimum balance requirement, which remains one of its main draws for customers seeking a low-cost banking option.

The October 1 change is therefore less about introducing a new charge on the account itself, and more about tightening the definition of transactions that count toward the monthly free cash withdrawal allowance.

For BSBD customers, the key takeaway is straightforward: four cash withdrawals a month remain free, but AePS withdrawals will now be included in that count, while digital transactions will continue to remain free. Customers who use cash regularly are advised to keep withdrawals within the four-transaction limit to avoid the Rs 15-plus-GST charge on each additional transaction.
