WhatsApp Bill Payments has launched in India, a feature native to the app, which will allow users of the platform to find, manage and pay their household and utility bills within the app, powered by the Bharat Connect (Bharat Bill Payments System) network.

    Key Highlights

    • WhatsApp Bill Payments launches in India, giving users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
    • WhatsApp is now the 8th largest UPI app with 167.89 million transactions worth Rs 12,957 crore in July.

Access to 22,722 Billers Across 30 Categories

Through WhatsApp Bill Payments access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories will be available for users to pay their bills, including electricity, gas, water, FASTags, insurance, credit card and loan repayments etc.

The introduction of WhatsApp Bill Payments in India coincides with the fact that the messaging service is already active with India's real-time payments system, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), that is already a part of the country's digital payments landscape. The messaging app has over 850 million users in India alone  its largest market in the world.

Meta Executive Highlights Simplicity of WhatsApp Bill Payments

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta (India) said, "WhatsApp is already the simplest way for millions of Indians to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance, all without leaving the app." He added, "With WhatsApp Bill Payments, the company is bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household, aiming to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message and extend the convenience of digital payments to people across the remotest parts of the country."

Users will be able to use payment methods such as UPI, credit and debit cards to settle their bills through the WhatsApp Bill Payments feature. The company said it is gradually rolling out the service across India, with full availability expected on both iOS and Android in the coming weeks.

    WhatsApp's Broader UPI Growth Story

WhatsApp clocked 167.89 million transactions worth Rs 12,957.07 crore in July, more than doubling its transaction volume from the previous year. It is currently the eighth-largest app by UPI transaction volume, ahead of players such as CRED and Amazon Pay.

In July 2025, WhatsApp had processed 74.6 million transactions worth Rs 5,412.58 crore, making it the 11th-largest UPI app at the time. WhatsApp Pay first crossed the 100-million transaction mark in December 2025.

NPCI Restrictions Lifted 19 Months Ago

The growth in the messaging service's payments volumes comes about 19 months after the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) removed restrictions on WhatsApp Pay's user onboarding in December 2024.

The apex retail payments body had granted WhatsApp approval in November 2020 to go live on UPI under the multi-bank model in a graded manner, initially allowing it to onboard 20 million users. This limit was raised to 40 million in 2021, and subsequently to 100 million in 2022. In 2024, all restrictions on the number of users WhatsApp could onboard were finally removed, paving the way for its rapid growth since.
