The Next Unicorns: Indian Startups Transforming Finance in 2026

Shiwani Pradhan, Assistant Editor, Finance Outlook India

Indian startups is writing one of the most compelling chapters in global venture history. With more than 850 funded fintech startups collectively raising over $32 billion, 24 unicorns already crowned, and 41 soonicorns waiting in the wings, India's financial technology sector has moved well past the experimental phase. In 2026, the question is no longer whether Indian fintech can produce world-class companies - it already has. The question now is: which startups will define the next decade of Indian finance?

AI and machine learning technologies now hold over 36% market share in India's fintech sector, valued at $53.3 billion - with fraud detection models trained on 13 billion monthly transactions and credit infrastructure tested on hundreds of millions of borrowers. This is not emerging market experimentation. This is frontier-grade financial technology, built at a scale most countries cannot replicate.

India added five new unicorns in H1 2026 alone, spanning fintech, AI, digital lending, and space technology, as investors prioritised scalable business models, enterprise demand, and long-term technology innovation.  The next wave is already forming - and the Fintech startups below are among the most compelling candidates to join that club.

Juspay - Powering the Payments Infrastructure of India's Internet

Founded by Vimal Kumar, Sheetal Lalwani, and Shyam Kumar, Bengaluru-based Juspay creates infrastructure for payments that facilitates transactions for merchants and enterprises - and became India's first unicorn of 2026 in January after crossing a $1 billion valuation following funding from overseas investors.

Juspay sits at a critical but often invisible layer of India's digital economy - the payment orchestration infrastructure that sits between merchants, payment gateways, and banks. Its HyperCheckout and HyperPay products power checkout experiences for some of India's largest e-commerce and ride-hailing platforms. As India's digital commerce economy expands toward $1 trillion, the companies building its backbone plumbing - not just the consumer-facing applications - are increasingly where durable value is being created.

"Payments infrastructure is not a feature -  it is the foundation on which every digital business in India is built. When we started Juspay, we believed that the merchant experience in payments was broken. A decade later, that conviction has become a category." - Vimal Kumar, Co-Founder & CEO, Juspay.

KreditBee - Digital Lending for India's Underserved Middle

KreditBee, headquartered in Bengaluru, is among the three H1 2026 unicorn entrants from the city, joining Juspay and Sarvam AI in crossing the $1 billion valuation milestone this year.

KreditBee's core proposition targets one of India's most persistent credit gaps: the salaried and self-employed individual who earns too much to qualify for government subsidy schemes but too little to be a priority client for traditional private banks. By deploying ML-based underwriting using alternative data - including mobile usage patterns, UPI transaction history, and employer verification signals - KreditBee extends personal and consumer credit to millions of Indians who would otherwise be routed to informal moneylenders at punishing interest rates.

The company's 2026 unicorn status reflects investor confidence in the unit economics of responsible digital lending at scale - a validation that the sector's early concerns about asset quality and regulatory compliance have been substantively addressed by leading platforms.

"Credit is not a product - it is a signal of trust. When a first-generation earner in a Tier 2 city gets approved for a loan in minutes based on their actual financial behaviour rather than their father's credit history, that is the financial system doing what it was always supposed to do. We built KreditBee to make that signal accessible to everyone." - Madhusudan E, Co-Founder & CEO, KreditBee.

Groww - India's Largest Investment Platform by Active Users

Founded by Lalit Keshre, Harsh Jain, Neeraj Singh, and Ishan Bansal in 2016, Groww has grown into India's largest investment platform by active users - with 10 million-plus investors in mutual funds, stocks, US stocks, F&O, and fixed deposits. The platform is valued at $3 billion with $393 million in funding, and its 2026 focus includes NRI investment products, derivatives education, and credit cards.

Groww's rise mirrors the democratisation of investing in India that has gathered pace through the SIP revolution. When the founders left Flipkart to build a mutual fund investment platform in 2016, the idea of a mobile-first investment app for first-time investors was considered a niche product for a market that barely existed. Today, Groww has become the entry point for millions of Indians encountering equity markets and mutual funds for the first time.

The platform's expansion into US stocks, NRI products, and credit is a clear signal of its intent to become a comprehensive wealth super-app - competing directly with legacy private bank wealth management arms at a fraction of the cost and with a dramatically superior user experience.

"When we started, people told us Indian retail investors weren't ready. We believed differently - that they were ready, but the products weren't built for them. Everything we have done since is about closing that gap: simpler products, clearer communication, and zero tolerance for unnecessary complexity." - Lalit Keshre, Co-Founder & CEO, Groww.

    INDmoney - The AI-Powered Wealth Super-App

INDmoney, founded in 2019, has raised $124 million at a $640 million valuation, offering a comprehensive wealth management super-app that tracks all investments - stocks, mutual funds, US stocks, EPF, real estate - in a single dashboard, with AI-powered insights and recommendations.

Where most investment platforms focus on transaction execution, INDmoney has built its differentiation around financial aggregation and AI-driven advisory. The platform consolidates an investor's complete financial picture - including salary, EPF balance, external mutual fund folios, and international holdings - and applies machine learning to surface actionable insights: when to rebalance, where tax-loss harvesting opportunities exist, and how current allocations track against declared financial goals.

This approach positions INDmoney not as a broker but as a financial operating system - and at a $640 million valuation with clear revenue visibility from subscription advisory and brokerage, the path to unicorn status looks increasingly well-defined heading into 2027.

"Wealth management in India has always been relationship-driven - but most people don't have access to the right relationship. AI changes that equation entirely. We can deliver the kind of holistic, personalised financial intelligence that was previously reserved for UHNI clients, and make it available to anyone with a smartphone." - Ashish Kashyap, Founder & CEO, INDmoney.

Lentra - The AI Backbone of India's Banking Sector

Bengaluru-based Lentra is building the embedded AI infrastructure powering digital loan origination, underwriting, and processing for India's leading banks - including HDFC Bank, Federal Bank, Standard Chartered, and IDFC First Bank. Having raised $60 million in Series B funding at a valuation exceeding $400 million, Lentra has processed over 13 billion transactions and $21 billion worth of loans.

Unlike consumer-facing fintechs, Lentra operates in the infrastructure layer - enabling banks to digitise their lending journeys end-to-end without rebuilding legacy core banking systems. In an era where every bank is under pressure to match fintech-grade digital lending experiences, Lentra's B2B model gives it a structurally resilient position: its customers are the institutions, not the end borrowers, making it relatively insulated from retail credit cycle volatility.

"We built Lentra on a simple conviction: that banks don't need to be replaced - they need to be empowered. AI doesn't disintermediate banking; it makes banking dramatically better. Our job is to give every bank in India the intelligence infrastructure to compete in the digital age." - D. Venkatesh, Founder & MD, Lentra.

Sarvam AI - India's Own AI Foundation Model

Sarvam AI, the third Bengaluru-based unicorn of H1 2026, is building India's own AI foundation model - one trained specifically for Indian languages, contexts, and use cases rather than adapted from Western large language models.

While Sarvam AI's application spans multiple sectors, its financial services potential is significant. Indian fintech sector has long struggled with a language problem: the most sophisticated financial products are designed and explained in English, creating a structural barrier for the hundreds of millions of Indians whose primary language is Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, or Bengali. An AI foundation model purpose-built for Indian languages can enable voice-first banking, vernacular credit advisory, and regional-language KYC - collapsing the language wall that has historically kept rural and semi-urban Indians from accessing formal financial products.

"India cannot be an AI superpower on models that were not built for India. Every time a farmer in Vidarbha cannot interact with a financial app because it doesn't understand his language, we lose an opportunity for genuine inclusion. Sarvam exists to make India's digital future speak in every Indian's voice." -Vivek Raghavan, Co-Founder, Sarvam AI.

The Ecosystem Behind the Next Wave

What makes India's next unicorn pipeline genuinely distinctive is not just the companies - it is the ecosystem depth that has formed around them. Indian startup ecosystem has now produced 132 unicorns collectively raising over $119 billion, with Bengaluru alone accounting for 55 unicorns - dominating the country's innovation geography.

India raised $7.2 billion across 652 funding rounds in H1 2026, even as investors became more disciplined in deploying capital - prioritising scalable business models, enterprise demand, and long-term technology innovation over growth-at-any-cost metrics. The era of blitzscaling without unit economics is over. What has replaced it is more durable: capital going to founders who can demonstrate product-market fit, regulatory compliance, and a credible path to profitability.

Indian fintech companies presenting at global events like the Singapore FinTech Festival, GITEX Global in Dubai, and Money20/20 in Europe are no longer experimental startups seeking first institutional validation - they are companies with hundreds of millions in funding, real enterprise customer deployments, and international expansion ambitions. The conversation has shifted from "can India build?" to "what can the world learn from what India has built?"

What Separates the Next Unicorns from the Rest

Across the companies profiled here, a few common characteristics stand out - and they are worth noting for investors, founders, and observers alike.

Infrastructure beats applications in durability. Juspay, Lentra, and Sarvam AI are all building foundational infrastructure layers - payment rails, lending intelligence, language AI — that become more valuable as the ecosystem around them grows. Infrastructure compounds; applications compete.

AI is the differentiator, not the product. The most compelling next unicorns are not selling AI as a feature - they are using AI to dramatically improve the economics and quality of a core financial service. KreditBee uses it to underwrite better. Lentra uses it to lend smarter. INDmoney uses it to advise more personally.

Inclusion is the market. India's next fintech unicorns are not being built for the top 10% of the income pyramid. They are being built for the next 500 million Indians entering formal financial services for the first time - and that market is both larger and more loyal than any premium segment.

Regulation is an advantage, not a constraint. Every company profiled here operates within a regulated framework - and that regulatory legitimacy is increasingly a competitive moat, not a compliance burden. In a market where trust is the product, being demonstrably compliant is a growth strategy.

    Conclusion

India's financial transformation is not a single story - it is dozens of simultaneous stories being written by financial services startups who saw what was missing and chose to build it. The next unicorns will not all come from Bengaluru or Mumbai; they will come from wherever the sharpest founders identify the deepest unmet need in India's still-evolving financial services landscape.

The infrastructure is in place. The capital is disciplined but available. The regulatory environment is among the most innovation-forward in the world. And the market - 1.4 billion people, hundreds of millions still underserved by formal finance - is as large as any in human history.
