The EPF advance withdrawal rules have been revised by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), introducing new withdrawal limits and eligibility conditions for provident fund members. The changes are aimed at helping employees access their EPF savings for essential needs such as medical treatment, education, marriage and housing.
Key Highlights
- EPF advance withdrawal rules allow eligible members to withdraw funds for illness, education, marriage and housing needs.
- EPFO has specified withdrawal limits and frequency for different essential needs, including medical treatment and education expenses.
According to the revised rules, an employee becomes eligible to withdraw an EPF advance after completing 12 months of EPF membership. The amount that can be withdrawn depends on the applicable eligibility criteria and the balance available in the member’s EPF account.
How Much EPF Advance Can You Withdraw?
Under the new rules, eligible employees can withdraw an advance of up to 75% of the amount available in their EPF account, including employee and employer contributions as well as interest earned on those contributions.
The actual amount available for withdrawal will depend on the specific purpose and other eligibility conditions applicable to the member.
No Limit on EPF Withdrawals for Illness
EPFO has separately categorised withdrawals for essential needs, including illness, education and marriage.
For medical treatment, employees can take an EPF advance for treating themselves or members of their family. There is no limit on the number of withdrawals that can be made under the illness category.
For education-related expenses, eligible employees can make up to 10 withdrawals during their EPF membership period.
Marriage-related EPF advances can be withdrawn up to five times during the membership period.
EPF Advance Rules for Housing
EPF advances can also be used for several housing-related requirements. These include purchasing a house, flat or plot, constructing a house, repaying a home loan, and renovating or improving an existing home.
Employees can make up to five withdrawals under the housing category during their membership period.
In addition, members can make a maximum of two withdrawals in a financial year under special circumstances notified by the EPFO.

EPF Advance Withdrawal Application Online
Eligible employees can apply for an EPF advance through the official EPFO portal. Before submitting the application, members need to complete bank account, PAN and Aadhaar KYC verification.
Once the required eligibility conditions are fulfilled and KYC details are verified, members can complete the EPF withdrawal application process online.
EPF Withdrawal Limit Under Special Circumstances
Under Category 3, employees can make up to two withdrawals in a financial year for special circumstances notified by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of EPFO.
The revised framework provides EPF members with defined withdrawal limits based on their financial needs, while allowing access to their accumulated provident fund savings for key life expenses. The changes are aimed at making PF withdrawal more structured while allowing members to access funds for essential financial needs.
